Whataburger, please offer a plant-based entrée, like a veggie burger.
My name is Miguel Villarreal and I’m a school nutrition professional with over 30 years of experience. I’m also a Texas native and have enjoyed many meals at Whataburger over the years with my family. In my line of work, we’re hearing so much about childhood obesity and witnessing firsthand the results of unhealthy eating. Whataburger can help be a part of the solution by adding a plant-based veggie burger to its menus and help bring about a positive change to millions of Americans. Most importantly, for all the loyal customers in Texas and Southwest who are suffering from chronic illnessess due to poor dietary choices.
Thirty percent of our nation’s children and young adults are overweight or obese, suffering from type two diabetes and showing signs of plaque build-up in their arteries at earlier and earlier ages. All the best evidence shows that eating more plant-based foods can help change this—which is why groups like The American Heart Association support Meatless Mondays.
Adding a plant-based option is also good for business. A recent Mintel study found that 113 million Americans regularly eat meat alternatives. And Technomic’s “Burger Consumer Trend Report” indicates that “Younger consumers are highly interested in vegetarian burger options, with a quarter of consumers between the ages of 18 – 34 saying it is important for vegetarian burgers to be available on restaurant menus.”
So it’s no wonder why trailblazers like Bill Gates and Twitter founder Biz Stone are backing meat-free food companies. It makes sense that Chipotle rolled out tofu “Sofritas” at every U.S. location, and that Tim Hortons and Dunkin’ Donuts now offer almond milk. The list goes on: Tropical Smoothie Café added vegan chicken strips, and chains like Burger King, Denny’s, Johnny Rockets, Chili’s, TGI Friday’s and most recenlty White Castle and so many more already offer veggie burgers.
Whataburger can be on the cusp of this burgeoning national trend by offering a healthier option like a veggie burger. This simple step can help make a world of difference, both to American loyal consumers as well as the company’s profits. Whata-yasay?
