What would do if you felt secure in an affordable and cozy home?
The Issue
What would you do if you had a secure, affordable, and cozy home?
What would change in your life?
Would you create a family? Live independently? Work close to home? Invite family and friends over? Take in and care for a friend or family member? Put down roots? Join community groups and events? Grow your own food? Start a community project? Make plans for the future?
What would you do if you knew you could stay?
If rent was affordable. If you weren’t waiting for the next eviction notice, rent increase or landlord to sell.
If you real help with a down payment and renovation costs.
If you had somewhere you could call home. For as long as you needed.
Imagine what we could you with your life if you weren’t wasting so much time trying to find and keep a home.
Now imagine what Ireland could do with all that energy, creativity, care and potential.
This is the conversation we need to have.
We ask one simple question:
What would you do if you had a secure, affordable, and cozy home?
And then we need the Irish Government to act in the interest of everyday people to make those possibilities real.
We are calling for a Civic and Heritage Housing Programme that would:
• Pass a Tenants’ Bill of Rights for real protection against discrimination and the right to secure, affordable housing for all.
• Speed up the building of social and cost-rental housing, with greater funding and faster delivery.
• Insist on mixed-use planning for new builds so we can live where we work, shop, and get together.
• Offer upfront, zero-interest loans and grants to buy and restore vacant, abandoned and derelict properties.
• Create a Civic Landlord model for secure, affordable long-term rentals.
• Redefine first-time buyers to include people who have previously owned a home but lost that security, offering a fresh start.
• Limit short-term renting to owner occupied dwellings only.
• Require short-term rentals to be registered.
• Declare a moratorium on new short-term rentals.
Ireland has homes that could be brought back into use. It has people who could restore them, communities that need them, and people with ideas about what they could do if they had somewhere secure to live.
Let’s stop asking what a house is worth.
Let’s start asking:
What could people do if they had a home?
