Wales Green Party and Welsh Green Pride calls on the Minster for Health and Social Services in Wales to undertake an urgent review of the discriminatory ban on blood donations, which currently does not allow members of the LGBT+ community to donate blood
The Issue
With all donated blood rigorously tested to ensure it is not infected, gay men are needlessly banned from donating blood. Some heterosexual women are also banned from donating blood. We believe that in the light of a shortage of blood donors, this matter requires urgent review.
It is time this discriminatory ban was lifted, and gay and bisexual men given parity with their heterosexual counterparts
"You can still donate your organ or tissue even if you been turned down for donating blood" https://www.organdonation.nhs.uk/faq/eligibility/
With the whole of the UK facing blood donor shortages it is very important that the Welsh Blood Service and the Health Minister revisits the ban that is in place for the LGBT+ community.
All blood that is donated gets rigorously tested regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
Any person is able to catch HIV or Hepatitis regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
Anyone should have a right to save a life and donate blood regardless of gender or sexual orientation.
As the law currently stands, you cannot give blood
• If you are a man and have had oral or anal sex with another man.
• If you are a woman who has had sex with a man who has ever had sex with another man
