Dear Councillors of Mayo county council
This is an open letter to let you know after years of stopping the initiative to build a greenway for East Mayo on the closed railway from Milltown to Charlestown for the moment you have at least succeeded. The call for applications for greenway funding was issued by the Department of Transport yesterday, here is the link: https://merrionstreet.ie/en/News-Room/Releases/Ross_and_Griffin_issue_call_for_%E2%82%AC53_million_funding_for_Nationwide_Greenways.html
Thank you for ignoring nearly 300 submissions on the county plan back in 2013 asking for a greenway on the closed railway in East Mayo.
Thank you for ignoring what the public asked for in the Swinford Vision for the Future strategy published in 2012 which recommended a greenway on the routes
Thank you for ignoring the people of Kiltimagh who want a greenway not a velo-rail despite what your county manager tells you.
Thank you for ignoring three petitions on line. One petition for a greenway from Athenry to Sligo 21,000 signatures, The Kiltimagh Greenway petition 1,000 signaturs (over 600 from the Kiltimagh area) and a further 585 signatures on the Swinford/Charlestown greenway petition.
Thank you for stopping the tourism and health benefits this greenway would bring to East Mayo.
Thank you for stopping the greenways in West Mayo from being connected on a national greenway network via the East Mayo greenway connections to Sligo and Galway.
Thank you for stopping the regeneration of towns like Charlestown, Kiltimagh, Claremorris, Swinford that this greenway will bring.
And finally Thank you for nothing, for burying your heads in the sand and allowing the county council planning department to have spoofed you about Railways coming back anytime soon, you really fell for that one.
One last word the greenway campaign in East Mayo is not going away. Galway is battling on, Sligo is applying for funding, and don't any of you dare to try and stop these projects.
Once again thank you for nothing.
Yours etc
