Some of you may have read in the press today about Michael Ring and how his department is funding a project on the closed railway route (the greenway route) for a “velorail” on the closed railway at Kiltimagh. Michael Ring has granted almost €300,000 to this project in his own constituency, you can read about it in todays Sunday Times https://www.thetimes.co.uk/edition/ireland/ring-freewheels-into-problematic-mayo-funding-row-hpv65nbl3 The funding was in two tranches, the first tranche was about €180,000 and it appears Mr Rings department staff advised against the second tranche of funding of almost €120,000 in December 2017 but Mr Ring defied this advice. This is a huge issue. The velorail on about 12km of the closed railway near Kiltimagh could block the Western Rail Trail greenway for the section near Kiltimagh. We think there is a good compromise, and that is to have a parallel greenway alongside the closed railway for the section the velorail runs on. We already have a petition set up for this which already has over 900 signatures and are now asking everybody who has signed the petition for a long distance greenway from Sligo to Athenry to go and sign this petition which focuses on this one section of the greenway route.
