West Virginia University administration has a history of tolerance for rapists and predators. They have failed too many victims in the past. This needs to change by providing students with more protection, safety, action, and transparency. We cannot allow survivors stories to be continuously swept under the rug and ignored by our own school, the school that is supposed to protect us. We must urge the administration to do better by protecting victims when they come for help, implementing new solutions and policies to create a safer campus for EVERYONE, and holding predators accountable for their actions when reported. College students are among the most vulnerable age group for crimes related to sexual assault, rape, and harassment (and yes, this includes BOYS too. Boys - as a college student, you are 5x more likely than the average male to be raped or sexually assaulted. If you didn't care before, I hope thats enough for you to care now). 1 in 4 women will be raped in their lifetime. This is a problem that plagues not only our campus, but college campuses everywhere. We cannot allow that to stop us from demanding justice for the survivors on our campus that feel as though our school has failed them. By creating an environment that lacks transparency from our own school administration, we have discouraged victims to speak up and give power to their voices. If we work together to find solutions to prevent and reduce the amount of sexual misconduct on our campus, as well as work towards justice for cases that already exist, we will create a safer and better West Virginia University. Every victim deserves for their voice to not only be heard, but also respected.
