Better Mental Health Support for WA Adolescents

The issue

From ages 4-17 within WA, 1 in 7 individuals have been assessed in the past 12 months as having a mental disorder. In our day to day lives in WA, it is inevitable that a child or teen we know and love struggles with mental illness. Wait times for psychiatrists take a minimum of three months on average but can take up to years, and children and teens are regularly rejected from mental health facilities and services because their mental health is regarded as “not bad enough” despite many suffering addiction, severe eating disorders and/ or suicidal ideations. The goal of this petition is to raise awareness to the WA and Australian Government that West Australians are disgusted by the lack of funding, education and accessibility surrounding mental health for people aged below 18, and specifically below 16, within WA, and that change needs to be made. Wait times need to be decreased. Costing of mental health services needs to be decreased. The numbers of accessible bed in facilities needs to increase. Funding for staff training and education needs to increase and the consistency and communication within hospitals between families, patients and staff needs to be improved. The invalidating of individuals struggle needs to stop as no one with a mental illness should be denied help . This is just a start to get people talking and thinking about this very important issue within WA and to spark change.
