Who are we? A real mixture of people and professions: Track engineers, artificers, boilermaker welders, builders, train drivers, train engineers, civil and mechanical engineers, professional businessmen and women and even an ex RAAF pilot (me!). So many people along the track are in fact descendants of those men who, back in 1899, true pioneers, built the railway and opened up the north east of Tasmania, the source of the timber that developed the city of Launceston. Undoubtedly, ground breaking engineering at that time and only 19 years after the first trans US railway was built. There wasn't a lot of mechanical assistance available at that time and the line was dug out of the side of hills, through hills by pick and shovel and blood sweat and tears. Just so much history. Of all the disused rail lines to pick for a proposed cycle trail, the north east line is by far in the best condition, having been completely refurbished in 1994 and maintained until 2007. Even now, there is Tasrail activity on the line. Let's keep the line, not only for historical reasons but for 100% of the population and tourists who can use a train and also for the farmers and descendants who treasure the line.
