We Will Not Be Silent: Justice for Ongama Mrenqwa - A Call for Truth and Accountability
The Issue
Ongama Mrenqwa, a 19-year-old Stellenbosch University student, is reportedly fighting for his life in hospital after an incident in which he was allegedly set alight by his ex-girlfriend. The incident occurred in a private student accommodation where both Ongama and the accused reportedly resided. A young man with his whole future ahead of him is now facing a devastating fight for survival, and we cannot remain silent.
Screenshots circulating on social media allegedly show prior threats to burn him and messages in which the accused reportedly suggests that she could use her perceived pretty privilege to escape accountability. These allegations are deeply concerning and must be properly investigated, with all available communications and other relevant evidence carefully examined.
Furthermore, there are unconfirmed reports that the arrested student may be permitted to continue writing her examinations while Ongama remains hospitalised, fighting for his life. His severe injuries and pain have reportedly left him unable to write his own examinations. While the accused retains her legal rights, Ongama’s rights, safety, dignity and access to justice must receive equal and meaningful consideration. His suffering must not be overlooked, and the seriousness of what allegedly happened to him must not be minimised.
As concerned members of the community who believe in justice, accountability and the protection of victims' rights, we cannot remain silent. We recognise that decisions regarding bail and detention must follow the law. However, we are calling for a thorough investigation, accountability under the law, and appropriate consideration of Ongama’s safety.
We therefore ask you to sign and share this petition. There must be no shortcuts when investigating a case in which a young person's life is at stake. Let us stand together for Ongama, support his family, and make our voices heard. JUSTICE MUST BE PURSUED!
