We Want Eco-Groovy School Buildings in Denver Public Schools!
The Issue
Our schools invest in our future
On Earth Day Eve, 2022, Denver Public Schools (DPS) heard student voices and committed to climate action!
Our school buildings are polluting our planet
While creating its first ever Climate Action Plan, DPS found that energizing school buildings accounts for 84% of DPS' greenhouse gas emissions, and most of that energy goes to heating and cooling.
The obvious next step is to figure out how to make our schools comfortable for us and the planet.
Electrification is the eco-grooviest thing DPS can do
Heat pumps are a fantastic solution because they can both heat and cool our schools in an eco-groovy way. Heat pumps are three-to-five times more energy efficient than natural gas boilers! Plus, heat pumps are powered by electricity, which can come from renewables.
Electricity is getting more renewable all the time. DPS’ power comes from Xcel Energy, which is already powered by 48% renewables, and that percentage is headed up.
Even better, DPS can save money and help the planet by generating its own renewable energy!
We can turn our schools from polluters to planet coolers
Though costly up front, renewables can pay for themselves over a 10-12 year period. In addition, the Inflation Reduction Act provides substantial subsidies that can make renewables like solar and geothermal a smart financial choice for our district.
What if every school had solar panels on top, and every football field had geothermal running underneath? What if every school was powered by our own electricity? DPS truly can be a national leader on climate change.
Tell DPS you want eco-groovy school buildings!
Denver Public Schools has the chance to make this happen right now. Hundreds of community members are meeting right now to decide what to fund with DPS’ next bond package.
Sign this petition and tell the committee you want to invest in eco-groovy school buildings with this bond package!
DPS has shown that it can listen to student voice.
Use your voice to make a difference.
