The Issue

To the Davis Food Co-op Board of Directors,

We, the undersigned member-owners and community patrons of the Davis Food Co-op, wish to offer our support for the Co-op’s recent decision to employ professional security personnel. While some have expressed opposition, we believe this measure is a reasonable and necessary response to real safety concerns affecting both staff and shoppers.

Our Co-op thrives only when it is a safe and welcoming place for everyone who comes to shop. Unfortunately, the very real challenges posed by aggressive behavior from individuals struggling with addiction or untreated mental illness have created an atmosphere that too often feels unsafe, especially for families, seniors, and employees simply trying to do their jobs.  Concluding otherwise risks alienating those who want to be here but hesitate to enter.

We appreciate that the Co-op’s leadership acted in response to staff concerns and did not take this step lightly. Security is not about “militarization”; it is about ensuring that people can comfortably buy groceries without harassment or danger. Tactical gear may look imposing, but its purpose is deterrence, not intimidation.

To our minds, there is no contradiction between inclusivity and basic security. Inclusivity means that families with young children, people with disabilities, and older adults feel just as welcome in our aisles as anyone else. True accessibility does not mean tolerating behavior that threatens or drives away others. It means maintaining a safe environment so the Co-op remains a community space for all—except those who choose to disrupt or endanger it.

We recognize that some see uniformed security as symbolic of something larger, but we encourage a perspective rooted in local realities rather than national headlines. This is not about aligning with “oppressive tactics” but about practical stewardship of our shared space. A co-op where some of of shoppers do not feel safe coming here is not a co-op at all.

Unlike the other petition, we are not making demands with lofty, unattainable ideals, nor will we threaten boycotts.  We do have one request that we share with the other petitioners:  we ask that the Board send an explanatory email to members, so the reasoning behind the decision is clear to all. Transparency fosters trust, and in this case, reassurance.

We trust the Board to continue balancing compassion with responsibility, remembering that protecting people’s ability to shop peacefully is itself a form of care. We are grateful for your leadership, and we support this step toward keeping our Co-op the safe, accessible, and friendly place we love.

Respectfully, The Undersigned Member-Owners
