Now that the Federal Liberal Party, like its coalition partner, has decided not to support the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice enshrined in the constitution, it’s important for us to become more active in our campaign.
In his 1968 Boyer Lecture After the Dreaming, W.E.H. Stanner exposed the ‘cult of forgetfulness’, observed by most Australians on a national scale. He called it the ‘Great Australian Silence’.
The failure to say YES in the Constitutional Referendum will usher a state of much greater silence. This silence will corrupt ethical and moral fabric of Australia’s collective being.
I hope we can avoid this great fall. I hope we can find the will to be decent and fair human beings. I hope we can find moral courage to say YES. I hope we can convince others to say YES. I hope we can.
As Noel Pearson says in the interview: ‘It’s “The Voice” to Canberra and not “The Voice” of Canberra.’
