The Issue
Rugby is not just a sport; it’s a passion that unites people across continents and cultures. As someone who deeply loves rugby, I recognize the power of this game to bring communities together, inspire young athletes, and create unforgettable moments. That's why I'm particularly excited about the prospect of bringing an iconic test match between the Springboks and New Zealand to a vibrant and growing rugby community in Amsterdam.
The Johan Cruyff Arena in Amsterdam is not only an architectural marvel, but also a symbol of sports excellence and innovation. Hosting the Springboks vs New Zealand match here on 12 September 2026 would not only enhance the global appeal of rugby but also introduce the unparalleled spirit of Southern Hemisphere rugby to enthusiastic fans in Europe.
While the venue for this vital fixture is yet to be determined, hosting the match in the Netherlands offers several benefits that must not be overlooked. The Johan Cruyff Arena is a state-of-the-art facility with a seating capacity of over 55,000, ensuring that thousands of spectators can witness this epic clash in a comfortable and modern setting.
Amsterdam is also a hub of multiculturalism and inclusivity, making it the perfect backdrop for a sport that thrives on diversity. The city's accessibility, with its well-connected transport systems and proximity to international airports, makes it a suitable location for fans from around the world to gather and celebrate this historic event.
Moreover, the Netherlands has been making significant strides in promoting rugby at grassroots levels. Hosting a high-profile match like the Springboks vs New Zealand would undoubtedly boost visibility and interest in the sport throughout Europe, inspiring future generations to pick up the ball and start playing.
In conclusion, selecting the Johan Cruyff Arena for this prestigious test match would not only be a milestone for Amsterdam but also a testament to the growing global Rugby community. We urge World Rugby and the relevant national unions to consider the unique advantages Amsterdam offers and choose it as the venue for this historic match.
