PETITION FOR A UNIFORM ONE HUSBAND–ONE WIFE MARRIAGE LAW IN INDIA

Decision Maker: Government of India and the Parliament of India

Petitioner: Himanshu Pandey, Delhi
Date: 16/03/2026

Subject: Request to introduce a law establishing one husband–one wife marriage for all citizens in India.

Respected Sir/Madam,

I respectfully submit this petition requesting the Government of India to introduce a law that establishes a uniform one husband–one wife marriage system for all citizens, regardless of religion. A single standard for marriage will promote equality, fairness, and stronger family structures in our society.

At present, different communities follow different personal marriage laws. For the sake of equality and justice, it is important that all citizens are governed by the same marriage principles under the Constitution.

Proposed principles for the law:

Every citizen should be allowed to have only one husband or one wife at a time.
A second marriage should only be permitted if the first spouse has passed away.
In cases where the spouse has died and young children are present, remarriage may be allowed to ensure proper care, emotional support, and family stability for the children.
This rule should apply equally to people of all religions in India so that every citizen is treated fairly under the law.
This proposed law would help:

Promote gender equality and justice.
Protect the rights and dignity of women.
Strengthen family stability and responsibility.
Ensure equal legal standards for all citizens.
I humbly request the Government and the Parliament of India to consider this proposal seriously and initiate discussions or legislation to implement a uniform monogamous marriage law for all citizens of India.

Such a step would strengthen social harmony, uphold constitutional equality, and support stable families for future generations.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Himanshu Pandey
