We saved the Westside trail together, blocking a detour and delay that would have hurt our community. Thousands of us are now enjoying the completed trail every week, thanks to you and your prior support!
But there's another challenge to finishing the rest of the Monterey Bay Scenic Trail through Santa Cruz County that's on the ballot this June. It is ballot measure D, sponsored by the richly-funded GreeDway private-donor PAC which is outspending the 'No on D' side by 4 to 1.
But look at everyone OPPOSED to MEASURE D:
League of Women Voters
Democratic Party
Sierra Club, Land Trust, Ecology Action, Climate Action Network
NAACP and the GLBT Alliance
Three Chambers of Commerce
Organized Labor, including Teachers and Building Trades
Past 3 Exec. Directors of the Regional Transportation Commission
The ENTIRE Santa Cruz City Council
Past Mayors Cynthia Mathews, David Terrazas, Katherine Beiers & Mike Rotkin
Former Supervisors Gary Patton, John Leopold & Neal Coonerty
Ryan Coonerty and every candidate for his County Supervisor seat
Past federal/state leaders Sam Farr, Fred Keeley, Mark Stone & BIll Monning
Cruzio, Seaside Co./Boardwalk, Swenson, Roaring Camp,
and hundreds more.
IF MEASURE D PASSES, IT WILL:
* Delay completion of the trail through all of Santa Cruz County for new planning, design, state & local reviews, finding new funding, and easement and environmental lawsuits.
* Lead to ripping out the tracks as happened over the mountains 50 years ago, likely killing any chance of mass transit forever.
* Make a dozen or two trail neighbors richer at taxpayer expense. Could that be why there's so much money behind Measure D?
* Force any future transportation-related General Plan change to go through another expensive and divisive public vote. General Plans are meant to be updated regularly, not locked in stone. But Greenway would have lost a simple advisory vote, so has placed this ill-designed complex measure on the ballot instead.
LET'S FINISH THE TRAIL NOW AND KEEP THE RAIL FOREVER
