The Issue

Since his selection as a candidate for the 2022 Birmingham City Council elections, David has been a committed and diligent councillor for Kings Heath and Brandwood.

In all my interactions with David, I've always found him to be both engaged and passionate about making improvements to his ward. I have been particularly impressed with his actions as part of the Transport Scrutiny Committee (including being nominated as its Chair this year).

It's therefore incredibly alarming to hear that Councillor Barker has been deselected from standing for Birmingham City Council at the next election, despite his substantial contributions. It's crucial to understand the importance of retaining committed and effective leaders like him. Councillor Barker's role on the Transport Scrutiny Committee isn’t just a title; he actively seeks out issues and solutions, ensuring that our public transportation policies meet the needs of all residents.

It also strikes me as a poor political move. David received more votes than his fellow ward Labour candidate at that election, and I will personally find it extremely difficult to vote Labour at the next election because of this action. I know that I am not the only person who has cancelled their membership of the Labour over this.

It’s imperative for us to come together to prevent the loss of such a pivotal figure in our local governance. Join me in this effort to retain Councillor David Barker and sustain the forward momentum in our community’s transport and infrastructure advancements.
