The Issue

As a resident of Mytholmroyd with a family that has for many years relied heavily on trains for commuting and essential trips, we have often struggled with getting to our schools and workplaces due to unreliable and inadequate train services. The limited train service doesn't only affect my family, but many residents in our village, including the elderly, who rely on the train for essential trips to larger supermarkets, healthcare facilities, and markets.

In short, the limitations  of accessibility to the rail network are hampering education and work opportunities for many and can often be a barrier for people to perform their essential errands. As your local Councillors we are determined to improve this situation.

Mytholmroyd station has the largest station car park by far on the Calder Valley line, Mytholmroyd also has a population comparable to Hebden Bridge, but sadly sees fewer trains. Hebden has three trains an hour in both directions, while Mytholmroyd gets only two during peak times. Not only would a more robust train service help solve local parking and congestion issues, but it's also a sustainable and more environmentally friendly alternative to road travel, especially on our already stretched main roads.

Moreover, our lovely village is a popular spot for walkers, cyclists, and day-trippers. With increased train services, the attraction of our beautiful locale with its small businesses and heritage can reach more people and give a much needed boost to local tourism.

Your local Councillors, working with The Community Rail Partnership and local business forum initiated a park and ride service to help alleviate nearby parking issues, but this is only one part of a better transport solution for the area. This clearly showcased the demand for more public transport options. Increasing the number of trains stopping at Mytholmroyd would open up opportunities for everyone in our community, regardless of age. We need to unlock the potential for our village for both journeys in and out.

We are calling on our local transport authorities at Network Rail, WYCA and through our Calderdale Council transport leads push for a much needed increase to the number of train services stopping at Mytholmroyd.
