We need Justice & Action for Pregnant Elephant struck with a hot Rod Jhargram,West Bengal

The Issue

We, the undersigned, are deeply shocked and outraged by the recent tragic incident involving the pregnant elephant in Jhargram. Reports have confirmed that this innocent animal was brutally struck on the back with a hot rod by members of the local " Hula " team under the jurisdiction of the Jhargram Forest Department. This inhumane act resulted in the death of the elephant and her unborn calf, causing an immense loss to wildlife and a grave breach of ethical standards.

We call upon the Jhargram Forest Department and all relevant authorities to take immediate and decisive action in response to this incident. Our demands are as follows:

Investigation and Accountability: Conduct a thorough and transparent investigation into the actions of the hula team members involved in this incident. Identify those responsible and hold them accountable for their actions.

Legal Action: Pursue appropriate legal measures against the perpetrators in accordance with wildlife protection laws and animal cruelty regulations.

Enhanced Training and Monitoring: Implement rigorous training programs for all personnel involved in wildlife management and ensure strict monitoring to prevent future incidents of cruelty.

Public Awareness and Education: Launch an awareness campaign to educate the public and involved teams about the importance of humane treatment of wildlife and the legal consequences of animal cruelty.

Compensation and Support: Provide compensation for the loss of the elephant and her calf, and offer support for the rehabilitation of affected wildlife areas.

This incident underscores a need for stronger enforcement of animal protection laws and better training for those interacting with wildlife. We urge the Jhargram Forest Department to act swiftly and decisively to ensure justice for the elephant and to prevent such tragedies in the future.
