We Need a Public Meeting Before Frankford Avenue Safety Improvements Project Begins
The Issue
PennDOT is preparing to move forward with the Frankford Avenue Safety Improvement Project, a revamp of Frankford Avenue through the Fishtown neighborhood.
We support the goal of making Frankford Avenue safer. But conditions at the intersections of Frankford and Palmer St and Montgomery Ave are changing rapidly, and we are concerned that decisions based on older traffic and pedestrian conditions may not fully reflect what this area looks like today — or what it will look like when construction is completed.
We support a safer Frankford Avenue — and we want to be heard before changes are implemented.
A new Whole Foods supermarket is scheduled to open at Frankford Avenue and Palmer Street, while the Shissler Recreation Center at Frankford and Montgomery is attracting scores of students and children through after-school programs and a great new playground. Shops are attracting more pedestrian and vehicular traffic. These changes have important implications for pedestrian crossings, vehicle traffic, parking, and the safety of children and other pedestrians.
"I'm a dad trying to safely cross Frankford Ave at Montgomery with my family on a daily basis. It's gotten more difficult to do this every year. PennDOT has the funds to revamp Frankford starting at the end of 2026 but they don't seem to be working with current data. I put a camera at the corner and captured more than 1500 pedestrian crossing on a single day from 11am to 6pm. Many pedestrians, strollers, parents, students, kids and dogs. Thompson and Frankford got a stop sign 10 years ago. Belgrade and Frankford got a traffic signal 5 years ago. Oxford and Frankford is getting a traffic light, and Palmer and Frankford is getting a new crossing - nothing is planned for Frankford and Montgomery."
We are asking PennDOT to hold a public meeting before construction begins in a matter of weeks .
Residents should have an opportunity to see the current plans, understand the traffic and pedestrian data used to develop them, and explain what has changed since that data was collected.
We are asking PennDOT to listen before construction begins.
We ask PennDOT to hold a neighborhood public meeting, present the current plans and supporting data, explain how recent and anticipated neighborhood changes have been incorporated, and consider reasonable modifications based on community input.
If you live, work, walk, drive, bike, take transit, or your students and children (dogs too!) travel through this part of Frankford Avenue, please sign and share this petition.
