The above photo is the design for the New Animal Shelter for Uxbridge/Scugog Ontario. This project has been indefinitely delayed by the Town of Uxbridge.
What needs to happen is that we all go back to the drawing table and re-work this plan. It is a great plan but if we include a low-cost, high-volume, high-quality Spay/Neuter Clinic somewhere in the plan, we don't need to build such a big (and expensive) building. A low-cost Spay/Neuter clinic needs about 1,200 sq. ft. -- this plan is almost 6,000 sq. ft.
It has been proven that when a community opens a low-cost, high-volume, high-quality Spay/Neuter Clinic their Animal Shelter intakes go down substantially -- (30% to 50%) thus making the building of a huge shelter no longer necessary.
The Region of Durham does not have a low-cost, high-volume, high-quality Spay/Neuter Clinic for the animals of financially marginalized people in any of the Municipalities within the Region. Let's include one in the New Animal Shelter for Uxbridge/Scugog.
So please contact Mayor Dave Barton of the Town of Uxbridge at mayor@uxbridge.ca and tell him we want to go back to the table now with a different solution.
