If anyone is experiencing energy metering that doesn't appear to tally with actual usage, can I suggest that you serve a subject access request (SAR) on the energy company "for sight of the certification for the meter(s)"? This is documentation that the energy company is required to hold by law. It's particularly relevant for older meters that may be faulty. Without the certification, the billing has no legal standing. The certification should confirm the meter's calibration date and expiry.
The SAR also gives you the opportunity to ask for sight of all energy consumption and billing records. If the company's billing records data has become corrupted, this will be the place to spot it.
If you do not receive a response within 30 days, you should refer the case to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) as a formal complaint. If needs be, the ICO will issue a legally enforceable decision notice on the energy company.
