We Call on West Lothian Council and West Lothian Leisure to Reopen Armadale Swimming Pool
The Issue
We, the undersigned, call upon West Lothian Council (WLC) and West Lothian Leisure (WLL/Xcite) to work together to reopen and operate the Jim Sibbald Swimming Pool in Armadale.
Armadale Swimming Pool has been closed since 2023, leaving our community without a valued local swimming facility.
The pool is a Common Good asset, inherited for the benefit of the people of Armadale. We believe every reasonable effort should be made to protect its future and restore its use for the community.
Our original petition attracted over 4,280 signatures, demonstrating significant public support for saving this facility.
Seven months of community campaigning, engagement and discussions have highlighted the challenges involved in reopening the pool. However, we believe the primary responsibility for exploring sustainable public leisure provision should not fall solely upon community volunteers.
We are calling for:
West Lothian Council and West Lothian Leisure to formally reconsider reopening and operating Armadale Swimming Pool.
Both organisations to work collaboratively to identify a financially sustainable operating model, including consideration of funding and management arrangements.
Full transparency regarding the financial, operational and practical options considered for reopening.
Protection of the Common Good asset from irreversible disposal or demolition while reasonable reopening options are being explored.
Meaningful engagement with the community throughout the process.
Swimming is more than recreation. It supports water safety, physical health, wellbeing and equal access to opportunities for children, families and future generations.
Our community has demonstrated its commitment. We are now asking West Lothian Council and West Lothian Leisure to demonstrate theirs.
This petition does not replace our original Save Armadale Swimming Pool petition. It builds upon that support with a clear and specific request for action.
Reopen our pool. Protect our Common Good. Work together for Armadale.
