Domestic rabbit owners continue to live in fear with their pet rabbits. Rabbits have to be kept in lockdown indefinitely until a vaccine for all the new virus strains: RHDV2, RHDV1aK5 are available. We are of course also still in fear of Myxo , a dreadful virus also with no vaccine here . Why do rabbit owners have to live like this to save the lives of their pets? Cat and Dog owners are afforded the privilege of vaccines for known virus in Australia. These viruses for rabbits are introduced . The extraordinary methods of Bio-security, include cleaning everything profusely with F10 disinfectant, including cars on returning home, shoes, clothing changed and showering on return home, etc for fear of bringing the viruses home, excessive screening, fly protection, zappers, sprays, etc . All costly and time consuming adding pressure to family life and stress that makes protecting pets, a mammoth task. Why do we do it? Because pet rabbits are just as much part of our families as cats, dogs, etc are to other pet owners. Rabbits are the most engaging of animals and to have the love and trust of a prey animal is a privilege not everyone enjoys. People who never experience this are truly missing out. Its a very special experience.
