We are very concerned with the numbers of reports coming to our group of large numbers of rabbit losses due to the rapid spread of one of the field tested strains RHDV2. This virus has no available vaccine and the old vaccine available has no effect on this strain. Government bodies are seeminly unconcerned that a virus that is not 100 per cent species specific is killing our domestic rabbits. They have not officially imported K5 yet (due to be released in April 2016) if it gets final approval which as its already been field tested here is actually already out there. (along with 38 other strains plus RHDV2) that were imported for testing here. There is also a chinese strain RHDVa that is also killing rabbits at the moment. Once a virus is tested in the field (10 sites around australia) it cannot be put back in a bottle. This is of major concern for all domestic rabbit breeders. Many Rabbit meat breeders have lost their whole industry. Many show breeders have lost either all they have or very close to it. Our group has a dot map showing the areas . We are keeping a data base of losses so please feel free if you are affected to join our group on facebook ,, (Against the approval of K5 from Korea). we have a lot of info on file as well.
