Allow skateboarding and long boarding on Western Carolina University campus sidewalks.

The Issue

Western Carolina gives a parking fee to anyone who skateboards on campus but allows people to use bikes and scooters on campus. This is discriminating their students who want to skateboard and pointlessly limit their methods of transportation. Anyone caught skateboarding on campus is given an $80 parking fee.

Why Skating Should be Allowed on Campus:

The vast majority of campus have a skateboard and frequently use it to get to class, to hang with friends, and much more
-Skateboarding can be therapeutic and stress reliving (like scooters and bikes to others)
-It’s a way to get to class if you:
-Don’t have a car
-The nearest Cat Tran stop is far away, or if they are not running
-If you don’t have a car on a weekend and you’re in an upper dorm (Reynolds and Robertson aka “The Hill”) people don’t have easy access to central campus
-Skateboarding is a great way to find your community and lifetime friends
It’s a large part of campus life and a socially distant activity during COVID
-Skateboarding is safer than biking because you can ditch the skateboard into grass, on a bike you can’t and are more likely to injure yourself and others
-Skateboarding is a form of exercise and cardio to keep you healthy if you don’t want to go to the gym (due to COVID)
-Skateboarding is NOT rebellious, “gangster”, or rude, it’s a way to express your self in a healthy way.
-If students are allowed to used bikes and scooters on campus, then skateboarding and long boarding should be allowed too.

Sign this petition to show that skateboarding and long boarding are freedoms of self expression and recreation.
