Give Washoe County high schools the option to have graduation at their own facility.
The Issue
We would like to have the right to have our children’s high school graduation at their respective schools and at hours that are easier for family and friends to attend. For example, a Thursday morning at 8am at Lawlor is not a great or easy time for the students who have worked so hard to be recognized and celebrated by their friends and family. Not only are people dealing with heavy traffic, but they are at a facility they are not familiar with, other people have to work and can’t necessarily get time off, siblings have school - in general, there are many conflicts for people to attend. Last year, the high schools were allowed to host their own graduation ceremonies, and it was a great experience! Give the schools and the families of the seniors the option to choose ceremonies at their own facility if they so desire.
It’s a big deal to our kids and our families. Also, what about the teachers who have taught these kids for 4 years who can’t attend graduation because it’s off-site and during school hours. They deserve to see these kids graduate, too. And the graduates deserve to celebrate with them.
These kids, now launching into young adulthood, spent 4 important years in those schools, on those fields, walking those halls. They made friends and were encouraged by teachers. Played sports and cheered in their classmates. Performed their music and arts. Displayed their creations. Laughed and sometimes grieved with each other. They should get a say in where it all culminates. They want a chance to finish at their home.
Please share and let’s make our voices heard.
