Dear Cleanappers,
We're sure that by now, you've probably heard the great news, but if you haven't, here it is: Starbucks just announced that they will phase out all plastic straws at all of their stores by 2020. That's the good news.
The bad news is that we still have 2 years of dealing with new straws being dumped into the environment, and then 20 to 200 more years of dealing with all of those green straws that are already in our environment.
But there's another bit of news that we wanted to share that didn't get as much attention. Did you know that this decision by Starbucks was possible only as a result of change agents like you?
That's right, over the past two years, 150K people organized right here on change.org to raise awareness about this simple, positive, and very consequential step for our planet as well as for Starbucks' bottom line. Here is one of the several petitions that were started and were later joined together into the victorious petition (https://www.change.org/p/starbucks-replace-plastic-straws-with-biodegradable-paper-straws).
Bottom line: petitions like this work!
But petitions only work if we continue to put in the work to reach out to our loved ones to explain to them that by signing on to these causes, they're not just sending out wishes and hopes, "thoughts and prayers."
By signing this petition, you are demanding that one of the world's largest corporations make an easy change (like flipping a switch) that will make your life and the life of those around you much cleaner and safer. Oh, and it will make BigTech hundreds of billions of dollars in new revenue too, in case you feel uneasy asking your pro-market friends to sign on to a petition that's addressed to a successful tech giant.
Not everything that tech giants do works smoothly or at maximum efficiency. If you want proof of that with Google, just download the Google StreetView app, and see for yourself how much room for improvement there is between services like GoogleMaps/StreetView/etc. That's all our petition does -- asks Google to get better, for Google's own sake, and all of our sakes.
Please help us reach our next target of 500 supporters. Please forward this to at least three of your friends who you've ever seen wagging their finger at a big corporation, saying "Imagine how much easier ALL of our lives would be if this company just did X!"
For us, "X" is Google activating trash/hazard reporting. What is it for you?
Thank you,
@CleanApp
