The Issue
Not all newspapers publish same sex wedding announcements, even though same sex marriage is now legal across the country. In early October, my husband (Aaron Lopez) and I (Shaun Murphy) sent in our wedding announcement to my hometown newspaper in Monroe City, Missouri. But Lakeway Publishers Inc., a corporation that runs community newspapers across the South, declined to publish it. They also refused to print ads from our close family and friends congratulating us. We would like them to change their policy so we can share our good news with people in my hometown. This would encourage people in Monroe City and other small Southern towns to embrace gay couples who are starting families. It would also help small town youth who are struggling with same sex attractions to see same sex couples as normal.
