Not all Walmart stores sell live fish. Their stores without live fish are called "dry" stores, which sell dry goods only, and do not turn a profit.
"Wet" stores sell live fish which brings up their bottom line, but Walmart doesn't make anything from fish sales. The fish are cheap and seen as disposable. Their actual profit comes from supplies and predicted future sales. To accomplish this, they partnered with several name brand fish supply company's.
Marineland ( a subsidiary of Spectrum Global Pet Group) furnishes, Walmart with display tanks, and supposedly performs scheduled professional maintenance. When I asked managers why the tanks in their stores were kept in such abysmal condition, I was told at 12 locations that the filters were 6 months behind on routine maintenance.
Marineland, Tetra, API, Aqueon, and other subsidiary's, manufacture an exclusive line of products for Walmart called AQUA-TECH and Aqua Culture. Open a box and you'll find a mash up of brands together under the name Aqua Culture. These beginner tank kits tie impulse fish buyers into future Walmart purchases, where they have to return to by replacement filters ect, provided their fish survives.
An interesting side note that truly encapsulates the tragic mindset of this situation is, Seaworld lists Tetra as their contact for home aquarium hobbyist, on their educational website.
