Keep the Walgreens on 82nd & International Open!

The Issue

With less than one month's notice, Walgreens announced plans to shut down its store located at 8102 International Blvd. in Oakland, by July 29, 2021. As the only pharmacy in Oakland’s District 7, this decision will force low-income residents in the surrounding area to travel miles to refill their prescriptions that had previously been right down the street. Given the high prevalence of chronic conditions and significant health disparities that plague Deep East Oakland, we can not afford to see these critical services quickly removed without allowing residents proper notice and accessible alternatives.

To make matters worse, we have been informed that one of the reasons Walgreens is closing the store is because of the high percentage of low-income Medicare and Medicaid patients who get their prescriptions filled by this store and the lower profit margin the store makes off of these prescriptions.  We call on the $140B Walgreens Corporation to reconsider this decision that centers profits over people despite its purpose of being the “Champion the health and well-being of every community in America.”

Whether or not you live in East Oakland, we are asking you to help us save this store by signing this petition!
