The Issue

The hard working students and staff of the Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) use asynchronous days as a breather day. WCPSS plans on giving fewer asynchronous in the second semester. This will result in student and staff stress and a decreased performance. Asynchronous days are not a break from school but more a day of regaining the strength and will to finish the week strong.

We, the signers of this petition, ask for the same one asynchronous day a week during the second semester. This provides a day to recharge and refocus and provides students an opportunity to demonstrate their independent learning. Being online for school 5 days a week for almost 6 and a half hours a day can be a strain on the students and staff. Research shows that spending to much time on computers causes lack of sleep, itchy eyes, blurry vision, but most importantly, a lack of focus.

Just one asynchronous day a week will yield improved results over 5 days of synchronous online schooling. Grades will be higher because of the improved focus levels. There will also be fewer issues among the students and staff as they will not be uncomfortable because of eyestrain. This one day every week is the difference between students learning at school and not just attending it.
