The latest move to establish more privilege for Maori is a DOC proposal to establish 12 'High Protection Areas' (HPA) in the Hauraki Gulf. While this looks like a good conservation move these will also be available to iwi for customary fishing rights exclusive to Maori. I believe if we, as a nation, are serious about marine conservation we should all be making an equal sacrifice. I believe there is too much privilege being set up on the basis of race and this bodes ill for our future as a united society.
