Latest news on Ahu Moana petition Waiheke Island

Dear supporter of the petition to oppose Ahu Moana for Waiheke Island

To date nearly 900 people have supported this petition. This is a great result. Last week I sent a copy to Eugenie Sage,  Minister of Conservation as well as the Waiheke Collective.  Copies were sent to the candidates for National, Labour and the Greens for Auckland Central. I also sent copies to the members of the local Waiheke Community Board and a copy plus a letter to Gulf News.

I just reported the results to date and did not close the petition which is still open for you to share.

I pointed out a couple of important developments since we began this campaign. First, on 27 August an article appeared in the Waiheke Weekender which stated "The Sea Change report (which first introduced Ahu Moana) proposes a 100 m wide area in the sea all along the Hauraki Gulf shorelines". In fact this statement is incorrect and misleading and minimizes the physical impact of Ahu Moana. What the report does say is "Ahu Moana are localised near shore co-management areas along the length of the Hauraki Gulf and its islands that will extend from mean high water springs (the high tide mark) generally out 1km."  Page 48, Sea Change Hauraki Gulf Marine Spatial Plan, April 2017.

In addition I noted that an edition of Gulf News in July ran a one page advertorial by the Collective in support of their project. In  the ad they stated that the Collective did not have a predetermined agenda for the outcome of the conference in late September. This is wonderful news as it means that the conference will be free to drop Ahu Moana owing to this opposition and focus on options for marine conservation that will have more community support.

Cheers to you all
