Voting Transparency and Accountability Reform

The Issue

Overview:

Every day, I watch the world around us evolve with technology that makes our lives more transparent and accountable. I recently sent a package through FedEx, and I was amazed by the sheer sophistication of the tracking system. From the moment it left my hands, I knew its exact location, when it was in transit, and the precise second it reached its destination. Companies like UPS and FedEx can track countless items to the tiniest detail, ensuring accountability at each step.

Yet, when it comes to the fundamental act that upholds our democracy—voting—we're left in the dark. I cast my vote, trusting machines to record it accurately, but where's the proof? There's no receipt, no verification, no serial number—nothing. How is it possible that we can track a package from one end of the country to another, even all the way to a specific house, but we can't confirm that a machine recorded our votes as intended?

I am deeply concerned and frustrated by this glaring oversight in our electoral process. Voting is the bedrock of our constitutional republic, and every citizen should leave the polling booth confident that their vote counts and is accounted for. This isn't just about trust; it's about transparency and accountability, fundamental principles that should be at the core of our democratic process.

Join me in urging Congress to prioritize Voting Transparency and Accountability Reform. Our democracy deserves better. You deserve better.

THIS IS THE LETTER THAT WILL BE SENT TO CONGRESS:

Dear Congress,

We the undersigned are petitioning on behalf of the citizens of the United States as concerned constituents, eager to bring an important issue to your attention - the urgent need for voting transparency and accountability in our federal election process.

One of the greatest rights and privileges we have as citizens of this great nation is the ability to participate in our democratic process. We cast votes, choosing leaders and policies we believe will best serve our communities and our nation as a whole. This right, exercised by millions across the country, must be respected, honored, and protected.

However, currently, after we cast our votes, particularly when utilizing electronic voting systems, there is a significant lack of evidence or proof available to us to confirm that our votes have been accurately recorded and counted. This deficiency is not a trivial matter; it strikes at the heart of our democratic principles and erodes public trust in the electoral process.

This is not about mistrusting the diligent officials who dedicate themselves to maintaining our constitutional republic, but rather about instituting a system that is inherently trustworthy, that does not require blind faith from citizens, but instead offers verifiable proof.

I propose that we take a page from the countless other transactions we make in our day-to-day lives, where we are provided a receipt, a tangible, unarguable record of the transaction. I urge you to propose and advocate for legislation that mandates the provision of a receipt for each vote cast in our presidential elections.

This receipt should feature a unique serial number corresponding to each ballot, allowing voters to verify their vote post-election without violating the anonymity of the vote itself. This would not only provide a sense of comfort and certainty for voters, but also function as a powerful tool to detect and prevent any potential discrepancies or interference in the election process.

In a country where we can track the delivery of a package or a pizza with detailed precision, it is, frankly, inconceivable that we don’t have a similar mechanism in place for something as consequential as our vote.

I understand that changes to our voting systems must be carried out carefully, ensuring privacy, security, and accessibility. However, the creation of a receipt system for our votes could be a monumental stride toward fostering increased trust, accountability, and transparency in our electoral process.

I humbly urge you to use your platform and influence to champion this cause, to enhance our electoral system’s integrity, and to reassure the American people that every vote does indeed count and can be accounted for.

Thank you for your time and attention to this crucial matter.
