O Ministério do Meio Ambiente planeja exportar peixes-bois-marinhos brasileiros para Guadalupe, uma ilha do Caribe. Não podemos permitir que isso aconteça, pois a conservação desses animais estará sendo ameaçada não só no Brasil, mas em toda a América Central e do Norte.

Trabalho com proteção animal há 15 anos e venho acompanhado a indignação de mais de 20 cientistas brasileiros com esse plano. Por isso, peço que você assine esta petição para que esses animais sejam protegidos aqui no Brasil, ao invés de serem exportados.

Os peixes-bois já estão extintos nessa ilha do Caribe e não há compatibilidade genética entre os animais do Brasil e os que habitavam essa região. Isso significa que se os animais brasileiros forem soltos lá, eles podem não se adaptar ou migrar e dizimar populações saudáveis de peixes-bois que habitam as costas da Venezuela, Colômbia, México e Estados Unidos por meio da transmissão de doenças ou genes não adaptados. Além disso, a situação da população brasileira não é confortável para que o país abra mão de um animal sequer. Ou seja: esses peixes-bois deveriam permanecer aqui.

Para piorar a situação, a coordenadora do Centro de Mamíferos Aquáticos (CMA), onde os peixes-bois brasileiros a serem enviados para Guadalupe estão alojados, revelou que um dos motivos para o envio é que a instituição passa por dificuldades financeiras e precisa de se livrar de alguns animais para ter mais espaço e fazer reformas.

Por favor assine para exigir que o Ministério do Meio Ambiente cancele imediatamente o envio de peixes-bois marinhos brasileiros para Guadalupe. Esses animais, que ainda estão em perigo de extinção, não podem ser submetidos a um projeto que tende ao fracasso e está sendo motivado por interesses financeiros!

Don´t put the Brazilian West Indian Manatees at risk

The Brazilian Environmental Ministry plans to export West Indian manatees from the Brazilian coast to Guadeloupe, a Caribbean island. We cannot allow this to happen, since the conservation of these animals is being threatened not only in Brazil but throughout Central and North America.

It´s been 15 years since I started working with animal protection and have been following 20 Brazilian researchers resentment with this plan. So I ask you to sign this petition so that these animals are protected here in Brazil, instead of being exported.

The West Indian manatees are already extinct in this Caribbean island and there is no genetic compatibility between animals of Brazil and those who inhabited the region. This means that if the Brazilian animals are released there, they may not adapt or migrate and decimate healthy populations of manatees that inhabit the coast of Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico and the United States through the transmission of diseases or genes not adapted. In addition, the situation of the Brazilian manatee population is not comfortable for the country to give up even one animal. In other words, these manatees should stay here.

As if this wasn´t enough, the coordinator of Aquatic Mammals Center (CMA), where these animals are housed at the moment, revealed that one of the reasons for submission is that the institution is facing financial difficulties so they need to get rid of some animals to have more space and go through renovations.

Please sign the petition to ask the Environmental Ministry the immediate cancelation of the translocation of these animals to Guadeloupe. These animals, which are still in danger of extinction can not be submitted to a project that tends to failure and is being motivated by financial interests!
