The Issue
UPDATE AS OF JUNE 21ST 2020: The sixteen year old child also claims to have been sexually assaulted by John Barnes. The local sheriff admits that he and his department might have "dropped the ball" on this case without looking into it further first. This is beyond fucked up.
A Louisiana woman who was raped at sixteen was forced to give up custody of her child to her rapist and ordered to pay child support to him. Despite the sexual assault report that Crysta Abelseth filed against her rapist, John Barnes, judge Jeffrey Cashe ruled fully in favor of Barnes, forcing Abelseth to give up her sixteen year old daughter while paying child support every month. It is known that Barnes used multiple connections to get out of any responsibility for his crime and he currently faces no charges while the local police department continues to refuse investigating Abelseth's report. This is a gross miscarriage of justice and an insult to sexual assault survivors everywhere. Don't let judge Cashe get away with what he's done.
