Since it was launched in theaters back in 1989, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier has been a recurrent matter of discussion between Star Trek fans, but this flawed movie has a strong nostalgic sentiment in ST and Sci-Fi fans. Exploration, mistery, friendship, action and adventure could have made this one of the most successful entries in the saga, but production problems, budget-cutting, bad marketing and other issues send this movie to the bottom on most lists of Star Trek movies.

Since 1989, it´s director, William Shatner, has tried a few times to give this film a second opportunity. At first, he did ask for a million dollars to redo the special effects before the "Special Edition" DVD came out but they said no. When the 2009 Blu-ray collection of original crew Star Trek movies was being prepared, and the movie was to be remastered into 1080p, Shatner suggested to Paramount that he would like to oversee a director's cut of the movie (similar to the ones given to Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan). He sent extensive documents outlining areas for improvement, segments where the special effects could be redone, and listed all the omitted scenes he intended to restore that had been cut from the original release. Shatner later stated in an interview that Paramount, in no uncertain terms, said "No" to the venture.

Eleven years later, it is still possible, and probably easier, to restore the original camera negative , while making possible the fixes Shatner was planning to do. Bringing his document´s back to the table and finally making it happen. In this times, where the franchise is back on top, it would be a true gift to Star Trek devoted fans, and also a marketing opportunity, as this version could renew interest in the weakest point of the six classic movies and being released in a variety of editions. When someone is planning on buying STV, which version they would pick, the one that has been around for decades and which they probably already own in any format, or the new "William Shatner Cut, Never Seen Before"? The answer is clear.

It is up to you, Viacom-CBS.
