Hello fellow community members,

I am closing the petition as Mayor Norton has made it known that she will not be issuing a veto on the manner.

Before I say more, please come to the  Heritage Preservation Commission meeting tomorrow (8/25) with your questions, comments, and thoughts.

I am disappointed with the outcome, especially given how many people turned out to stand against it. But I am so incredibly proud of every person who signed, shared, and pushed for a veto. This community showed up loudly in support of the small businesses renting in this district and for the importance of historical preservation. Although we may have lost this battle, it is not over.

First - show up this fall and vote. Take a serious look at the voting history of wards 1, 3, and 5, review all of the candidates on the ballot, and vote for the candidate who aligns with your values best.

Second - we keep talking about these issues. We keep talking to city council, candidates, and each other about these issues.

Third - we keep pressure on city council. This will not be the last proposal that will impact our historical district and the small businesses that inhabit it. We keep showing up and keep demanding that our voices be heard.

This is not the message I wanted to send today, but it is the message I have. Thank you again for your time, signatures, comments, and passion. You are the folks to make Rochester a community that people want to be a part of,  and I am grateful for you.

With a heavy heart,

Aleida Koestler
