"Veteran Abused" in Hospital and Denied his Rights to Die at Home.

"Veteran Abused" in Hospital and Denied his Rights to Die at Home.
The Issue
Enclosed you will find all the information regarding the death of my husband (Thomas Arthur Hogan), who was a Retired 25 year Canadian Forces Navy Veteran (PO1-Signalman) and was chosen in June 1983, while still on tour as a member of HMCS Assiniboine to be part of the Royal Escort for Prince Charles and Princess Diana during their Halifax visit. Thomas was also a 32 year Level II High Security Service employee with Commissionaires Nova Scotia. My husband “Thomas” survived Prostate Cancer (of 2006), and Colon Cancer (of 2012). My husband is on the left side of the photo with the ball cap.
On March 14, 2024, my husband (Thomas Arthur Hogan) collapsed at home where I had to call 911 and administer CPR until EHS and Lake Echo Fire Department arrived 30 - 45 minutes later with the fire department only half a kilometer away from my home. I was told by EHS that they were taking my husband to the QEII Infirmary and told me this in front of 2 R.C.M.P. officers, while they intended to take him the DGH. I was lead on a wild goose chase looking for my husband. The hospital staff had my husband's hands restrained very tightly against the bed railings which were uncalled for, causing my husband’s hands to swell twice its size. My husband endured horrible abuse and torture by staff when I was not there in the evening. My husband told me how nurses would go into his room when he yelled for their attention, because he could not reach the call buzzer due to the restraints. The nurses would walk into his room apply pressure holding down his forearms and when he yelled for help, they covered his mouth with their hand and injected him with morphine to keep him quiet. YOU DON'T DO THIS TO A 75 year old VETERAN! Especially when he just suffered a stroke.
My husband was very devoted to his work and was a kind hearted man that wouldn’t hurt a fly. He was forced by a Nova Scotia hospital to give up on living after being abused physically and mentally and tortured while being restrained to his hospital bed; where he was stripped of his dignity in the most harsh/inhumane way by hospital health care workers. My husband (Thomas Arthur Hogan) died due to over-dose from Propofol (1,172.2 mg) in a 2-day period "20 mg of Propofol killed Michael Jackson", and also Morphine (42 mg) a lethal injection for an adult human in a 4-day period. So, you can only imagine how much this destroyed my husband's organs that would have kept him alive long enough to come home. He passed away on March 20, 2024 and he deserves to be respected as a Military Veteran and have his story told. Hospital I.C.U. doctors and nurses acted like dictators and kept all my husband's medical information from me.
My husband’s (Thomas Arthur Hogan) death happened only 6 days after he was admitted with a Post-Cardiac Arrest; I am speaking out now so it won't happen to anyone else. I am Thomas Hogan's legal married spouse and the hospital staff kept me completely in the dark, refusing to tell me anything that I was legally in my rights to know about my husband. The hospital staff took my husband’s rights to freely go home and my rights to speak on behalf of my husband. MY HUSBAND (THOMAS ARTHUR HOGAN) had his dignity stripped from him by the hospital, so he wouldn’t return home as per his wishes. A person’s dignity is important so they can rest in peace and that his spouse can have proper closure of his passing. I want the public to know what happened so it doesn’t happen to anyone else.
No doctor called my husband’s “Time of Death” in the room, I was not asked if I wanted an autopsy performed on my husband after death; and there are several discrepancies and lies in the “Cause of Death” report and many more discrepancies in my husband’s medical file, to which I have a full copy of his admittances to the Dartmouth General Hospital during May 14-21, 2023 and March 14-20, 2024 (all 457 pages). This is how I found out everything that the hospital was keeping from me, the legal married spouse of Thomas Arthur Hogan. The ICU staff held my husband against his will by over-dosing him with Morphine when he was capable of being discharged and sent home to recover, rather than being restraint to a bed to be distressed causing his Post Cardiac Arrest condition to worsen.
I will never give up this fight for my husband’s (Thomas Arthur Hogan) dignity that was stripped from his soul. I will right the horrible wrong that was done to an innocent Canadian Navy Veteran, and get him the respect he truly deserves. Doctors and Nurses and all health care workers are given a Privilege to practice medicine and not a right to PLAY GOD and end patient’s lives before their time.
Premier Tim Houston and Michelle Thompson-Minister of Health refused to communicate with me in any manner regarding my husband’s death in the Dartmouth General Hospital (I.C.U). No one in the Dartmouth General Hospital was ever held responsible or accountable for my husband’s death. I am demanding an enquiry into how any of this was allowed to happen, when health care is supposedly working under his government. Don’t allow this to ever happen to another Veteran and/or anyone wishing to go home to die.
On April 19, 2024, a month after my Veteran husband died, my MLA for Preston (Twila Grosse) told me to my face, “What happened to your husband in the hospital WAS NOT IMPORTANT.” Her assistant Katherine Brooks called me 3 days later (April 22, 2024), to tell me that the MLA was going to call me to apologize for being rude to me. I still have that voice message saved in my phone, since the day it was left. I still never got her apology and waiting.
Now, I suffer with the on-going battle of Depression and P.T.S.D since my husband passed away and I was sent home to live alone and deal with all this by myself with no support from anyone. I need your help and sign this petition, please. Thank you for your help.
