The proposed budget in the NC General Assembly (G.S. 115C-84.2) includes a revised definition of year-round schools as 17 "(b1) For the purposes of this section, a "year-round school" is a multi-track school…”  We ask that you reject the revised definition and allow single-track year-round schools to continue to operate in North Carolina.  Hillsborough Elementary is a year-round, single track school. It is not a multi-track, year-round school.  At this time, Orange County Schools (OCS) has no plans to convert Hillsborough Elementary School to a multi-track, year-round school. Therefore, if the revised definition is included in the final approved budget, our students, teachers and staff will be forced to convert to a traditional calendar in less than five weeks. This change would put a severe burden on the families of nearly 500 students, as we will need to identify child care options for an additional six weeks of summer after many local camps are full. In addition, our county and district has already set the calendar for next year, and budgeted accordingly. The logistics of postponing the planned opening of our next school year would wreak havoc on our students, families and teachers.  Hillsborough Elementary is a school of choice that allows families to choose the best academic environment for our children. We join parents, constituents and community leaders from across NC to ask you to please remove the requirement for year-round schools to be multi-track to allow our children to continue to have the best choices for their success.
