The Issue

SteamOS has the potential to become the first real consumer alternative to Windows in decades.

Valve has already done the hard part. SteamOS is fast, stable, gaming-focused, increasingly preinstalled on real PCs, and it's backed by one of the biggest names in gaming.

Right now though, SteamOS treats the desktop as a secondary feature.

When you first set up SteamOS out of the box, the choice should be simple:

How do you want to use SteamOS?

Gaming Mode — Start directly in the console-style Steam experience.

Desktop Mode — Start as a normal desktop computer, with Steam ready whenever you want to play.

That’s it.

Don’t remove Gaming Mode. Don’t turn SteamOS into Windows. Just trust us, the user, to decide how we want to use SteamOS. Even on Handheld systems.

Millions of us gamers out there are tired of Windows making those decisions for us: forced upgrades, unwanted defaults, built-in advertising, services we didn’t ask for, and an operating system that increasingly feels like it belongs to Microsoft instead of the person who bought the PC.

SteamOS can be different.

Valve has an opportunity no other Linux distribution has ever had: a trusted gaming brand, hardware manufacturers shipping SteamOS devices, millions of existing users, and an ecosystem large enough to make software companies eventually take Linux seriously.

But that opportunity only matters if SteamOS becomes more than a gaming console with a desktop hidden underneath.

Give us the choice.

Game Console or desktop PC.

Same SteamOS. Our computer. Our decision.
