Utah Dem Superdelegates Should Support Popular Vote Winner(s)

Utah Dem Superdelegates Should Support Popular Vote Winner(s)
The Issue
The Democratic National Convention, which will select the party's 2020 presidential candidate, includes two types of delegates: pledged delegates, who are chosen by popular vote or state-level delegates, and automatic unpledged delegates or "superdelegates." While pledged delegates may only vote for the candidate(s) who won their state in free and fair elections, superdelegates are free to vote for the candidate of their choice at the national convention in Milwaukee. If no candidate secures the required 1,990 delegate majority on the first ballot, superdelegates are then released, and are free to vote for a candidate of their choice, potentially overriding the will of the voters who selected them. By design, this is an undemocratic process.
In 2016, two of Utah's Democratic superdelegates—Salt Lake County Mayor Peter Corroon and Democratic National Committeeman Wayne Holland—pledged to cast their votes at the Democratic National Convention for the popular vote winner of our state. We call upon Utah's superdelegates to the 2020 Democratic National Convention to do the same: respect the voters and promise to cast your votes for whichever candidate wins the popular vote in Utah's presidential primary on March 3rd, 2020. Otherwise, divide your votes between the top vote-getters in a proportional manner.
Utah's five 2020 Democratic superdelegates are: Rep. Ben McAdams, Salt Lake County Mayor and National Committeewoman Jenny Wilson, Utah Democratic Party Chair Jeff Merchant, Utah Democratic Party Vice Chair Nadia Mahalatti, and National Committeeman Charles Stormont.
