The Issue
All books I have read on nutrition and general health state that REFINED WHITE SUGAR IS THE UNHEALTHIEST SUGAR on the planet linked to tooth decay, sight problems, obesity, diabetes, mental illness etc.
This UNHEALTHY sugar is the MAIN type of sugar used in MOST foods, snacks, drinks and desserts. It is often also the MAIN ingredient of cakes too!! It is very bad!!
SUGAR ADDICTION IS A BIG PROBLEM IN THE WORLD! We can improve the situation if we swap refined white sugar to unrefined natural sugar.
A HEALTHY DIET IS IMPORTANT FOR EVERYONE. A HEALTHY DIET CAN HELP PREVENT AND CURE MANY ILLNESSES. We need healthy ingredients in ALL our foods and drinks, not the unhealthiest sugar, unhealthiest salt, unhealthiest flours, unhealthiest fats, many harmful additives etc. which are currently in most foods and drinks!!!
Please let's use ONLY a healthy sugar in everyone's foods, snacks, desserts and drinks and sweets, in recipes, in recipe books, in cooking videos too!! We must NOT encourage people to use unhealthy refined white sugar in their cooking too!!
BOOKS ON NUTRITION STATE THAT UNREFINED NATURAL SUGAR IS A HEALTHIER OPTION SO LET'S USE THAT INSTEAD OF REFINED WHITE SUGAR EVERYONE!!
It is ALSO IMPORTANT to NEVER allow sugar to be the MAIN ingredient of cakes and desserts!! Currently supermarkets are mass producing and selling mainly cakes that have refined white sugar as the main ingredient!! IT IS VERY BAD FOR EVERYONE'S HEALTH!! Using such high amounts of refined sugar in desserts just ruins teeth, it ruins skin, eyesight, heart health, mental health and general health, it ruins birthday parties and other celebrations.
It is such a waste of time and resources to produce such unhealthy cakes!!
ALL CAKES AND DESSERTS COULD BE MADE WITH HEALTHY INGREDIENTS!! The main 2 ingredients of ANY dessert and cake SHOULD be healthy eg a healthy wholegrain flour plus fruit and a little unrefined natural sugar to sweeten them. Current recipes have mainly the unhealthiest sugar and unhealthiest flours as the main ingredients!!
Current recommendations are for adults to have max 7 teaspoons of sugar a day, ( 28 grams). Children should have max 4-5 teaspoons (16 or 20 grams). 1 teaspoon = 4 grams a day.
Currently in the West, children as young as 7 are ingesting 3 times the amount of added sugar they are supposed to eat or drink. They are eating and drinking around 50- 60 grams of sugar a day! That is twice the amount recommended for adults in a day!! And it is also generally the unhealthiest sugar too, refined white sugar!
Adults are eating and drinking over 4 times the amounts of added sugar they are supposed to have. They are having 125 grams of added sugar a day when they are supposed to have max 30 grams!! And the sugar they are eating and drinking is generally the unhealthiest sugar in the world, refined white sugar!
Some changes are needed to lower the amount of sugar going into everyone's mouths and bodies.
- It is important to change the type of sugar used in foods and drinks
- It is important to use less sugar, fewer sweeteners in people's foods and drinks.
- It is important to educate people in schools, TVs and on product packaging so each child and adult knows what the max amount of added sugar they should have is. So they can keep added sugar to a low level in their diets.
It would also help if each food and drink product that contains added sugar, printed a teaspoon symbol with a number in it to show everyone how many 4 gram teaspoons of added sugar are in each portion of a product. That way it is easier for people to keep track of how many teaspoons they have had in a particular day.
It would be good if there was a BAN on white refined sugar sachets. These could all be changed to unrefined natural sugar. All sugar sachets could be smaller and contain just a quarter of a teaspoon of sugar and sugar cubes too could be smaller and all contain a quarter of a teaspoon of sugar instead of 1 whole teaspoon of sugar.
Each sugar sachet should state how many grams of sugar are in the sachet. This should help people put less sugar in their drinks and foods every day. All the sugar sachets could be in unbleached paper instead of bleached paper too.
All restaurants, cafe's, and places offering food and drinks must offer unrefined natural sugar and NOT refined white sugar on tables.
White refined sugar must NEVER be used in children's meals and drinks in schools (canteens, packed lunches, bake sales, school events), restaurants, cafe's, hospitals, planes, drinks machines etc. All children's meals should be made with a HEALTHY sugar, unrefined natural sugar and not refined white sugar. Max 1.3 teaspoons of added sugar per meal for primary school children. Secondary school children should have max 1.5 teaspoons of added sugar per meal.
All dessert portions could be smaller and come with 1 portion of fresh fruit. That way less added sugar goes into the body.
It is also important that all sugar sold in supermarkets and shops be properly labelled. Currently most ingredients lists on packaging are not stating clearly what type of sugar is used, if it is refined or unrefined, natural or chemical. Everyone needs to know if the sugar is refined or unrefined, a chemical version or a natural version!!
All food and drink packaging MUST STATE CLEARLY if the sugar is refined chemical sugar or unrefined natural sugar. These could have a scale, from most refined to least refined so people know which sugar is better for them.
If these changes are made it will help people have stronger, healthier adult teeth FOR LIFE and not just until one's 20s or 30s as is the case for some people. It will help prevent mental illness and diabetes as well as sight problems. These changes can help people have a healthier and happier life.
