Pass comprehensive mental health legislation now!
The Issue
Hi,
We are a group of high school students who are committed to solving the mental health issues of today through awareness and policy. The mental health crisis is one of the most prevalent issues facing the American population today, not only the youth.
In fact, 1 in 5 American adults experience some form of mental illness each year (National Alliance on Mental Illness), while only 41% receive proper treatment (Mental Health First Aid). This is unacceptable, and we demand action now.
We need our elected leaders to step up and take the charge to fight for mental health equality. From a lack of parity enforcement to ghost insurance networks, it is too hard for many to get the help they desperately need.
Our petition focuses on the prioritization of mental health reform in Congress. For example, bills such as H.R.1109 (Mental Health Services for Students Act of 2019), which was introduced in February 2019, has been held up in the House without a vote. By prioritizing mental health legislation to the same extent as climate change, physical healthcare, and the economy, we can finally get action done.
This initiative isn’t about pushing a specific piece of legislation or political ideology. What we are trying to do is get the country and more importantly politicians in Washington to stop referring to mental health as just a talking point and start to take real, substantial action on the mental health crisis.
