Al Jazeera reports Israel's assault on Palestinians in May 2021 has deteriorated the water crisis in Gaza. This crisis is not new. The lack of potable water in Gaza has been documented by multiple sources for over a decade and is among the reasons Gaza was deemed to be unlivable by 2020.
Israeli based human rights organization B'Tselem reports that over 96% of Gaza's water is not drinkable. UNICEF reports 97% of water in Gaza is not drinkable. The United Nations, too has reported 97% of water in Gaza to be undrinkable
On May 27, 2021, UN Middle East Peace Coordinator Tor Wennesland reported resource shortages, stating that Israel barred the entry of fuel purchased through the UN for the Gaza Power Plant since 10 May 2021.
