Urgently Repair Thackeray Park’s Cricket Ground – Prioritize Safety
The Issue
Goal: Immediate City investment in safety and cricket infrastructure repairs
Location: Thackeray Park, 2955 Kipling Avenue, North Etobicoke
Organized by: Vasukee Sports Foundation (www.vasukeesportsfoundation.org)
Why This Matters
Thackeray Park’s cricket ground is one of Toronto’s few designated public cricket sites. Yet it faces critical safety and accessibility issues—making it unsafe and unsuitable for hundreds of local players, especially youth and newcomers.
From repeated injuries caused by very dangerous uneven playing field to water-logging, thorn bushes, and damaged fencing, the current condition of the field fails to meet basic safety standards expected in municipal recreation spaces.
What We’re Asking
We urge the City of Toronto, the Ward 1 Councillor, and Parks & Recreation staff to support immediate repairs to Thackeray Park’s cricket ground, beginning in Fall 2025.
🔧 Key Safety Repairs Requested
- Re-grading of the playing field to eliminate dangerous uneven surfaces
- Installation of a proper drainage system to prevent ponding and slips
- Removal of wild thorny shrubs and perimeter hazards
- Repair of protective nets and fencing to ensure safe boundaries
- Replacement of the current unsafe pitch with an artificial turf wicket
- Cricket-grade turf installation for a safer, playable outfield
- Basic infrastructure repairs to restore full operability
🧱 Aligned with the City’s Vision for Cricket
- Supports safety goals outlined by the Cricket Reference Group
- Advances community partnership model in Toronto’s Cricket Strategy
- Lays groundwork for future upgrades toward a C-Class to Premier facility
Who This Supports
- Youth leagues and grassroots cricket academies
- Community members from 3,000+ nearby households
- Weekend leagues, family recreation, and future City-led programs
Why It’s Urgent
This is not about luxury upgrades—it’s about safety and dignity. If action is delayed, players will face yet another season of dangerous conditions, and the City risks losing the trust of a growing, passionate cricket community in North Etobicoke.
