The Issue

Every monsoon season, families living along the coast of Kannamaly face an unimaginable dread as the relentless sea threatens to swallow their homes, roads, and livelihoods. These coastal residents are not only struggling to rebuild their lives but are also grappling with overwhelming emotional and financial burdens caused by continuous sea erosion. Without urgent intervention, the situation becomes more dangerous each year, leaving families in constant fear and uncertainty.

Kannamaly’s vulnerability to severe sea erosion, especially during the monsoon season, is a documented reality. This environmental crisis has already resulted in the displacement of several families, destruction of property, and serious damage to public infrastructure including roads and coastal pathways. Over the years, the coastline has continued to erode, creating a major threat to the safety and survival of the local community.

Recognizing the seriousness of this issue, the previous Government had reportedly granted approval for the second phase of permanent sea wall construction starting from Puthenthodu, Kannamaly and extending approximately 6.1 kilometers. It was publicly informed that Cabinet approval had been received and around ₹404 crore had been sanctioned for the project. Before the election, assurances were also given that the construction work would begin soon.

However, the people later came to understand that the project could not proceed because the required technical approval had not yet been obtained. Following the formation of the new Government, the people of Kannamaly are now looking forward with hope toward the immediate completion of all pending technical procedures so that the sea wall construction can begin without further delay.

This petition is not intended to support or oppose any political party or Government. Coastal protection is not a political issue — it is a humanitarian necessity and a matter directly connected to the safety, dignity, and survival of thousands of coastal families. Regardless of which Government is in power, protecting human lives and homes must remain a priority.

To address this growing threat, immediate technical approval and subsequent construction of permanent sea walls are urgently required to safeguard the people living in this vulnerable coastal region. Permanent sea walls have proven effective in several other coastal areas by reducing the impact of sea erosion and protecting lives and property. If implemented on time, this project can provide long-term security and stability for future generations.

Concrete action is required now to protect the families of Kannamaly. We respectfully urge the Government, concerned authorities, and elected representatives to prioritize and expedite all remaining approvals and implementation procedures related to this project. Human lives should never be delayed by administrative barriers or procedural inaction.

Join us in this crucial initiative to protect Kannamaly’s coast by signing and sharing this petition. Every signature strengthens the collective voice of the people and brings us one step closer toward securing safety, dignity, and a sustainable future for vulnerable coastal communities.

Together, let us ensure that the cries for help from Kannamaly’s shores do not go unheard.
