URGENT: Stop the Torture and Killing of Eritrean Refugees in Libyan Detention Centers — I
The Issue
To the UNHCR, European Union, African Union, and International Human Rights Organizations:
Right now, thousands of innocent Eritrean refugees—including vulnerable youth, pregnant women, and young children—are trapped in an escalating humanitarian catastrophe across Libyan detention centers and illicit trafficking warehouses.
Fleeing lifelong oppression and human rights violations, these refugees find neither sanctuary nor peace in Libya. Instead, they are subjected to daily torture, horrific physical abuse, forced extortion, starvation, and extrajudicial killings.
Driven to pure desperation to escape this living hell, hundreds are forced into unseaworthy boats across the Mediterranean Sea. The human toll is devastating. In August 2026 alone, four major shipwreck tragedies off the Libyan coast claimed the lives of hundreds of innocent Eritreans seeking safety:
- August 3, 2026: Catastrophic capsizing off the Libyan coast.
- August 15, 2026: Lethal boat tragedy with massive casualties.
- August 16, 2026: Multiple drownings of fleeing Eritrean families.
- August 22, 2026: Deadly boat disaster swallowing dozens of young lives.
These were not mere statistics—these were human beings, sons, daughters, fathers, and mothers whose lives mattered.
The international community cannot remain silent while our people are tortured on land and drowned at sea.
We urgently demand the following concrete actions:
1. IMMEDIATE EMERGENCY EVACUATION: The UNHCR and IOM must urgently accelerate and expand emergency evacuation flights to transfer all trapped Eritrean refugees out of Libya to safe third countries.
2. SHUT DOWN ABUSIVE DETENTION CENTERS: Impose immediate international pressure to close all torture warehouses and ensure independent human rights monitors have unhindered access.
3. HALT COMPLICIT MARITIME FUNDING: The European Union must immediately stop funding or equipping Libyan coast guards that intercept and force vulnerable refugees back into deadly detention networks.
4. PROACTIVE SEARCH AND RESCUE: Establish dedicated, proactive humanitarian search-and-rescue operations in the Central Mediterranean to prevent further drownings.
5. ACCOUNTABILITY AND LEGAL PROTECTION: Hold human traffickers and camp torturers legally accountable and grant immediate international protection to surviving refugees.
