Urgent Request for Traffic Light Installation at Willowdale Avenue and Elmwood Avenue
The Issue
TO THE TORONTO TRANSPORTATION SERVICES AND LOCAL CITY COUNCILLOR:
We, the undersigned residents, parents, and community members of Willowdale, are formally petitioning the City to immediately upgrade the existing pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Willowdale Avenue and Elmwood Avenue to a fully signaled traffic light with dedicated pedestrian crossing phases.
The Safety Crisis:
This intersection has become a high-risk zone for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike. Despite the current Pedestrian Crossover, drivers frequently fail to yield to pedestrians. This crossing is heavily used daily by young children walking to and from local schools, families, and seniors, making the current infrastructure dangerously inadequate. There have been several collisions in the past and near collisions on a daily basis.
Recent Incident:
The urgency of this request is underscored by a recent, severe safety incident at this exact intersection involving the serious injury of a young girl and her grandparent. https://toronto.citynews.ca/2026/10/26/child-struck-in-north-york-collision/ This preventable tragedy highlights that the current pedestrian crossing measures provide a false sense of security and fail to protect vulnerable members of our community. We cannot wait for another injury or fatality to act.
Our Demands:
Immediate installation of a full traffic signal light with synchronized pedestrian walk/don't walk signals at the intersection of Willowdale Avenue and Elmwood Avenue
Implementation of interim safety measures (such as increased signage, speed reduction measures, or a crossing guard during peak school hours) while the traffic light installation is being processed.
By signing below, we urge the City of Toronto to prioritize the safety of our children and residents by approving and expediting this vital traffic infrastructure upgrade.
