The Issue

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the alarming rise in vehicle hit-and-run incidents resulting in fatalities.  I lost my son James Patrick Rudzki who was only 29 years old and just starting his life . A week after his death was the closing on his first purchase of a home .  On October 29th 2025 while he was working for Pike Electric in Johnston County NC , he was killed by a hit and run .  The accused person entered a work zone and hit a low power line causing my son’s death . The man drove off and then hid his vehicle .

These tragic accidents not only destroy families but also undermine public trust in our traffic and safety systems. Too often, offenders flee the scene without accountability, leaving grieving families with a profound sense of injustice.

Current penalties for fatal hit-and-run accidents do not sufficiently deter reckless behavior or reflect the serious consequences of these crimes. I respectfully urge your administration to consider supporting legislation that imposes stricter penalties, including higher fines, longer prison sentences, and mandatory license revocation for individuals convicted of fleeing the scene in fatal incidents.

Increasing the severity of consequences will send a clear message that the lives of citizens are valued and that those who disregard human life by fleeing responsibility will face the full weight of the law.

Thank you for your attention to this critical issue. I hope that under your leadership, stronger measures can be implemented to protect our communities and honor the memory of those lost to senseless hit-and-run tragedies.

Sincerely,

Krystal T Brown
